As many people well know, the dryer vent can and does eventually become clogged. A clogged dryer vent not only impedes your dryers’ efficiency, but it is also a fire hazard. This is why it is important that the dryer vents are cleaned when they become clogged. However, it is much better to prevent the dryer vent from getting to that point. To help prevent or reduce clogs, DNA Air Duct Cleaning would like to share why or how dryer vents become clogged to better help you keep your dryer vents clean.
What Happens if You Don’t Clean the Lint Trap?
A lint trap is designed to capture most of the loose lint that comes off of your laundry. Some lint will get past the lint trap which is why eventually it will need to be cleaned. The lint trap should be cleaned out between each load of laundry. This will greatly reduce the amount of lint that gets into the vent system. However sometimes the lint trap may be bent or designed faulty and it is not collecting the lint properly. In this case, the lint will quickly clog up your dryer. If this occurs, you will want a new lint trap. Make sure to always clean out your lint trap as well. If you neglect it, it will cause the dryer vent to clog up faster.
Need to Fix an Obstructed Dryer Vent
When you leave paper, coins or other objects in your pocket or it gets inside your dryer, a number of things can lead to an obstruction. When the lint trap becomes obstructed, it will cause the lint to get trapped and will instead flow through the dryer ventilation system. This will result in your dryer vent clogging up and fairly quickly. It is important to prevent items from getting stuck in your lint trap. Always check pockets and make sure nothing gets mixed up that can cause an obstruction.
Faulty Dryer Vent Flap
As some lint will get past the lint trap system and enter the dryer’s vent, much of this lint should be released outside. The dryer vent leads outside the home where the lint particles can be expelled outside. At the end of the vent is a flap that stays closed until the dryer is running a cycle. When the dryer vent blows the lint through the vent, the flap lifts up to allow the lint out. If the flap is not lifting up, the lint will build up inside the vent leading to clogs. To prevent lint from becoming trapped, which is a major fire hazard, you will want to check the flap periodically to make sure your flap is working properly. You may need to lube the flap hinges to help keep the flap loose and able to open up freely. At times, you may need to replace the flap.
